As the year comes to a close, Kibitzers wants to take a look back at the year 2009. A lot of movies came out – a lot filled with hype, mostly never living up to the hype. Keep in mind that this is not the best movies of 2009, rather the best trailers. So here is a list of the top 20 movie trailers from 2009.
20 – Up
Pretty much whenever Pixar gets together – it’s going to be a good movie. And every time Pixar delivers to it’s viewers.
19 – Angels and Demons
Perhaps no book has overtaken the world like these in this decade. This teaser just works so well – dramatic narration and shots add to the tenseness of the film.
18 – Moon
This trailer makes you want to go see the movie and understand what happened on the Moon – Sam Rockwell’s performance looks great too. Added bonus: directed by David Bowie’s son!

17 – Kick-Ass
With a superhero movie coming just about every six months – it’s refreshing to see a movie like this. It’s also surrounded by tons of buzz – which is easy to see why after watching this trailer.
16 – Zombieland
Not another zombie movie! That’s what we all thought when the trailer started. But then it took a turn that looked hilarious, gory, and entertaining, which it proved to be.
15 – Public Enemies
One of the most renowned criminals in American history combined with two of film’s biggest stars. The trailer made this movie look like an amazing giant chase scene full of action.
14 – Wolverine Origins
Remember how sweet this movie looked when this trailer came out? Gambit was in it! Then it turned out that the movie leaked, Jackman cried, and the movie sucked.
13 – Terminator Salvation
Even though the Terminator franchise has seriously strayed from 1 and 2 (which were actually, good). McG’s take on the future of the franchise was surprisingly entertaining – and this trailer (complete with Nine Inch Nails music!) provided ample reasons to be excited.
12 – Paranormal Activity
Who knew a $15,000 movie could make $107 million plus?. Using viral marketing and the fans to “tweet their screams,” Paranormal Activity took over the internet and box office. We saw this movie in the midnight limited release premieres, and were scared out of our minds.
11 – Clash of the Titans
We talked about it over here, this movie looks pretty insane and is creating a lot of buzz on the internets! The longer trailer has been taken down, however the teaser remains!
10 – The Hangover
There really wasn’t a better comedy in the past few years than this movie. The trailer combined three supporting actors and made them into a trio you never want to see split up. The trailer made you have to see this movie and what happened to them. This trailer had perhaps the best ending of all – Mike Tyson. And yes, it was hilarious.
9 – The Hurt Locker
A semi-indie film that brought the war in Iraq back into theaters – and this time it was actually watchable and good. The trailer alone makes you tense just watching it!
8 – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
In this case, the movie turned out to be a disappointment, but the teaser trailer peaked your excitement! Weird noises?! Explosions?! Yelling?! Transforming!!
7 – Star Trek
Wait – a Star Trek movie that captured the interest of all kinds of people, not just Trekkies? That’s exactly what JJ Abrams and his marketing machine did with this trailer. Choir singing behind an epic trailer really adds to the drama of it all. A visually stunning movie, that we all can get excited for the sequel.
6 – Avatar
While the teaser trailer disappointed – the full trailer showed the epic scale to which James Cameron had built Avatar. With Gladiator music in the background, every scene looked like it could be the most dramatic 2 hours and 40 minutes of your life. (Stay tuned to Kibitzers for the Avatar review this weekend!)
THE TOP FIVE:
5 – Inglourious Basterds
Not being a huge Tarantino fan, I was still excited to see this movie. The trailer combined rock music, violence, guns, and killing Nazis – what more could you ask for?
4 – Where the Wild Things Are
A childhood classic + Spike Jonze + Real suits + Arcade Fire in the trailer = a combo that every hipster will get excited for. This trailer worked so well with the visuals and song.
3 – Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Being a huge Potter fan, this trailer already interested me. But this one was extremely dark and action packed. Not only did it take in millions of dollars, it added more fans to the group – making Potter more real, and less childish.
2 – District 9
Out of no where, a South African indie film was made into a major blockbuster and grasped everyone’s interest in exactly what was happening inside the fictional District 9. “There’s a lot of secrets in District 9…” This is one movie that lived up to it’s trailer hype.
1 – The Watchmen
Was there any movie that created more hype than this? I cannot say how many times I have watched it. Everything about it is perfect. There’s really nothing else to say, except to enjoy it.
