Monday Music Madness: “Giving Up the Gun” – Vampire Weekend & “Gorecki Fix Up My Girlfriend Some More” – Dan Black

22 Feb

We’ve featured Vampire Weekend here a lot. Let’s face it, they’re good. This song is off of their album “Contra”, which is on iTunes and in stores now. The Giving Up the Gun music video has a star-studded cast (RZA, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil Jon & Joe Jonas) so it’s very entertaining. And the song’s great too:

A Look Ahead to Movies in 2010

19 Feb

The year 2009 brought us some great movies (and trailers), Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air – and those are just the ones nominated by the Oscars (Harry Potter, Watchmen, Star Trek, etc). Well what can we expect from 2010? Well the Kibitzers are here to get you ready for the movie season. Now that Hollywood has dumped all their crappy movies in January and early February – we can get into movies actually worth paying for.

This list will comprise February til September. I know there are some great/anticipated movies coming out late 2010 (Harry Potter, Twilight, Arrested Development, etc) – however none of these have much info on it or more importantly, a trailer to accompany it. Thus I have decided to end in September. Once the year progresses, I’ll be sure to give you more.

With all that being said – let’s get to it! Here is a list (with trailers) of what to watch for at the movies!

Britain Releases New UFO Files (finally)

18 Feb

Up in the air! What is that?! It’s a bloody UFO Churchill! Well over the past 20 years, hundreds of UFO sightings have been reported across England, from over Chelsea’s soccer stadium to Stone Henge.

Made public Thursday, the files are the fifth collection of records about unidentified flying objects to be released by the Ministry of Defence and The National Archives as part of a project to open the files up to a wider audience. Thursday’s release is the largest so far, totaling more than 6,000 pages of material from 1994 to 2000.

Here are some of the reports released:

The files include a sighting by a man in Birmingham, England, in March 1997. He said he came home from work at 4 a.m. to see a large blue triangle-shaped craft hovering over his back garden.

It was silent but caused dogs in the neighborhood to bark, the report said. It “shot off and disappeared” after about three minutes, the report said, leaving behind a “silky-white substance” on the treetops, some of which he saved in a jar.

It was not clear what happened to the jar and its contents.

Save Abbey Road!

17 Feb

Abbey Road Studios is a recording studio located at Abbey Road, St John’s Wood, City of Westminster, London, England. It was established in November 1931 by a predecessor of British music company EMI, its present owner. Well EMI has been struggling a bit with money:

EMI recently revealed that it needs to raise more than £100m ($157.9 million) from investors to prevent it from breaching its banking arrangements with US lending giant Citigroup.

Wow. That is a lot of money to make up. EMI hopes to sell Abbey Road Studios and get roughly $47 million of that back. However, earlier this month, the record company also reported a pre-tax loss of $2.7 billion for the year to March 31, 2009. That is so much money lost!

Well, as you probably know, Abbey Road is most famous for The Beatles and their recordings there. Not only did they have an album named after it, but recorded ALL their albums and singles from 1962-1970. It was the Beatles who broke with tradition, changing recording techniques and forever changing the boundaries of what was considered popular music. Innovating with flanging, backwards recording, automatic double tracking, and controlled feedback, the Beatles utilised Abbey Road studios to full effect.

Not only did The Beatles record here, but a little band you might of heard of – Pink Floyd, from the 1960′s through the ’70′s. The list goes on and on.

After the jump, HOPE?!
