Summer is just about here and we’ve got the full film lineup for the DMV’s premiere documentary film festival!
AFI Docs (formally SilverDocs) has grown beyond Silver Spring and is now holding screenings throughout downtown D.C. Film festival spokesmen say the move is an effort to expand the event’s prominence and prestige on the documentary circuit. They’ve even cut ties with Discovery Communications and picked up a new headlining sponsor- Audi.
Some films will still be shown at the AFI Silver Theater but doc fans can now catch screenings at other venues such as the Newsuem. Hopefully these changes will allow more people to enjoy the festival as it gets grows into one of the most major non-fiction film festivals on the East Coast.
Tickets are on sale now and you can view all the films HERE. Be sure to check back soon for our list of MUST SEE DOCS for this year!
We FINALLY finished it! Just in time for your last weekend of parties before Christmas… our gift to you… The Xmas Power Hour! Enjoy!
Well it’s finally here… Paramount Pictures released the first official World War Z trailer starring Brad Pitt. And that’s pretty much all we have to say about it…
Online critics and The Kibitzers alike have been pretty harsh on the trailer- most notably for the drastic changes the film seems to have from the book. That, and the ridiculous way in which these “zombies” attack.
Director Marc Foster not only decided to allow his undead horde to be fast-moving (a break from tradition but as we saw in the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake- it can be done) but also to behave like a school of piranha or swarm of locusts. The trailer’s opening scene with Gerry Lane guessing what creature his daughter is thinking of alludes to this wild animal theme.
Paramount and star/producer Pitt also had to bring in Damon Lindelof (co-author of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus) to re-write a new ending for the movie even after footage for the third act had already been shot. Its release date has been pushed back from winter of 2012 to summer of 2013 as well. So it seems World War Z is off to very rocky start. But hey- no one said the zombie apocalypse was easy, and turning it into a successful movie seems even harder…
For now let’s look back at the Kibitzer’s fan-made trailer and see how close we got to the real thing. YouTube users and zombie fans might hate on us for making a fake trailer, but something tells us they’ll be wishing we had been in charge of the film!
With rumors circulating that Walt Disney Pictures is interested in a Rocketeer reboot, we here at the Kibitz knew exactly what we had to do! Especially with the box office success of the of the Iron Man franchise, it makes total sense why they want a piece of the flying superhero pie. As with their other films of late, hopefully the creative minds at Disney will have a slightly darker, more adult, take on the original 1991 film. So without further ado, here’s our remake of the high-flying, Nazi-fighting, American hero.
June has arrived and with Summer just around the corner, so is SilverDocs! Tickets go on sale today for the week-long documentary film festival in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Silverdocs runs from June 18 to 24 and you can find the full film lineup here.
Opening this year is the doc Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, which follows the unbelievable journey (see what I did just there) of the band’s new frontman, Arnel Pineda, as he leaves his separate ways (worlds apart) in Manila and becomes part of one of the most popular American rock bands of all time. If all the classic songs aren’t enough, the inspiring rags to riches tale of Pineda should also leave you lovin’, touching’, squeezin’.
Keeping the good tunes going, the festival is closing with another music doc. The Big Easy Express follows the bands Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show as they travel on a six-stop tour from California to New Orleans by railway. This mix of beautiful scenery, jam sessions and concerts looks to surely please the audience and will keep their legs tapping.

Well I’m sure you knew it was only a matter of time before we moved on to another epic superhero series that will surely become another blockbuster juggernaut in the years to come. It was tricky task compiling enough footage for The Justice League and their enemy Doomsday. It took some time but it’s not like we have anything better to do anyway. Besides, we had to do something while we wait for our royalty check from Marvel for making the The Avengers such a success with our fan-made trailer. Let’s see if we can do the same thing for DC Comics.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a Kibitzer’s exclusive fan-made trailer. This time we’re looking back to our childhoods to relive a classic film that taught you to never stop dreaming (that or some clever propaganda teaching kids the importance of reading). Either way, Orlando Bloom is now a grown-up Bastian Balthazar Bux who once again stumbles upon The Neverending Story. He learns that the terrible Nothing (and his servant G’mork) are back and plaguing Fantasia once again. Now Bastian must save the world (and the empress) that he loves so much.
OK, that huge jet rocket fire at the Daytona 500 was pretty epic but let’s be honest here- that’s the only cool part about Nascar. Sure tailgating is fun but no amount of booze can make 43 cars driving in a circle entertaining for more than a couple laps.
But then there’s the National Auto Sport Association. Created to promote racing (and right turns) for anyone who has that need for speed, NASA has a full tank of events across the country. Spectators can tailgate and watch the races for free and even ride-along with drivers if they are feeling daring.
So whether you’ve got Dale Jr. mugs you only drink with on Sundays or you’re the next Ricky Bobby, consider checking out a NASA event as a cheap way to watch some fast cars and drink beer.
I know we posted one of these a while back but the best things in life come in threes. So for your enjoyment, here’s the Vladimir Putin trilogy as The Most Interesting Russian in the world!
Arrrgh, forget the Black Pearl and port of Tortuga! Landlubbers be warned that a more fierce ship and terrifying crew patrol the waters of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. No waterfront store is safe when the Fearless and her drunk deckhands sail into port firing water cannons and terrorizing tourists. Some cowardly codfish run for cover while other scallywags stay put to tempt the mischievous crew. Yet the Fearless is always victorious and celebrates with music, dancing and (of course) lots of rum.
Led by the Urban Pirates, the Fearless has very few rules while out at sea; be the best pirate ye can be, party hard like pirates do and ALWAYS finish all the rum. Follow the pirate’s code and ye be in for a night of swashbuckling fun. The Kibitzers crew proved their sea legs and dare any of you scurvy dogs to see if ye has what it takes to man the cannons, search for booty and live the pirates life!
