2013 AFI Docs Film Festival

22 May

afidocsSummer is just about here and we’ve got the full film lineup for the DMV’s premiere documentary film festival!

AFI Docs (formally SilverDocs) has grown beyond Silver Spring and is now holding screenings throughout downtown D.C. Film festival spokesmen say the move is an effort to expand the event’s prominence and prestige on the documentary circuit. They’ve even cut ties with Discovery Communications and picked up a new headlining sponsor- Audi.

Some films will still be shown at the AFI Silver Theater but doc fans can now catch screenings at other venues such as the Newsuem. Hopefully these changes will allow more people to enjoy the festival as it gets grows into one of the most major non-fiction film festivals on the East Coast.

Tickets are on sale now and you can view all the films HERE. Be sure to check back soon for our list of MUST SEE DOCS for this year!

Midland, Texas: Your Hand in Mine

18 Apr

QuickTime PlayerScreenSnapz001

Recently I went to Midland, Texas for a work trip on a shoot. While there, I couldn’t help but be reminded of ‘Friday Night Lights’ — especially because the town the book is based off of was written just 1 town over. Anyways, I took some of my footage I shot and edited it down to a short piece to the beautiful music by Explosions in the Sky. Hope you enjoy it and miss FNL as much as I do.

Week 12 NFL Predictions!

21 Nov

CRUNCH TIME!

Week 12
Thursday, November 22nd

Houston Texans at Detroit Lions 12:30 PM

Andrew – Houston. I got to go with Houston being the all around better team here… but something tells me that this game will be pretty close.

Greg – Houston. The Lions have not won on Thanksgiving since 2003 (if I did my math right). That is a rough streak. And it certainly does not get easier against the Texans. I expect their defense to come out strong after an AWFUL performance last week.

Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys 4:15 PM

Andrew – Washington. Washington has to be feeling good, and Dallas struggles through just about every game. If Washington can keep the game close through three quarters, then I definitely think Redskins have a chance here.

Greg – Dallas. Washington has some good things going right now. With a win here, they could be right back in the wildcard (and maybe division?) hunt. But it’s not meant to be. If I’ve learned one thing about the Redskins, it’s that they will give you hope and then RIP it away from you. And that, is what they will do to all their fans tomorrow. Romo will have a huge game. He does not lose in November.

New England Patriots at New York Jets 8:20 PM

Andrew – New England. It’s always a gamble what Jets team will show up for these games… on one hand the Jets only live to beat the Patriots, on the other hand they just rallied last week and two weeks in a row (especially on a short week) would be really hard. Meanwhile the score machine that is the Patriots rolls on, plus with BB taking over the defense again… not seeing this game going in New York’s favor.

Greg – New England. Yay they play on Thanksgiving this year! I really hope the Gronk injury doesn’t hurt them today, but something tells me Sanchez won’t have two great games in a row.

Sunday, November 25th

Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears 1:00 PM

Andrew – Chicago. Bears at home with that defense playing against terrible Christian Ponder. The Bears defense will crowd the box to begin, daring C-P to throw, and throw he will… interceptions, and if Chicago is able to get an early lead, then this game will be all but over.

Greg – Minnesota. So it appears that Jay Cutler might be coming back, but that still doesn’t solve their horrible offensive line. I think the Vikings pull out the mini upset in this one and suddenly, the Bears look human.

Oakland Raiders at Cincinnati Bengals 1:00 PM

Andrew – Cincinnati. Easy-peasey. Oakland has a rough travel schedule this year, but more importantly I want Cincinnati to win this one for Hue Jackson.

Greg – Cincinnati. Slowly the Bengals have been coming back and winning a few games to get in the playoff discussion. Their playoff push starts here, with an easy win over the Raiders.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns 1:00 PM

Andrew – Cleveland. Ha… man… I don’t know… a total gamble I know, but this is a tough game and I’m pretty sure Pitt’s defense gave everything they had last game against the Ravens. Not like it’s in Cleveland’s DNA to capitalize on good opportunities, but again, if they’re able to keep the game low scoring and tight through the first three quarters, I think they can pull out a win.

Greg – Cleveland. Had to switch my pick here once I was told that Dixon is now the starting QB for the Steelers. They are not getting any offense out of that. So the Browns win here! Funny too, we were just starting to say the Steelers were on the path to the elite this year…

Buffalo Bills at Indianapolis Colts 1:00 PM

Andrew – Indianapolis. Colts at home are always a good choice, but I also think they’re out to bounce back from the thrashing they got from New England. Fine you’re not elite, but you should be able to beat the Bills.

Greg – Indianapolis. I wrote the Bills first, then realized it was in Indy, which Luck will feel much better about. Will be interesting to see how he bounces back after a horrible game against the awful Patriot’s defense last week though. Shoot out it is!

Official World War Z Trailer Arrives…

9 Nov

Well it’s finally here… Paramount Pictures released the first official World War Z trailer starring Brad Pitt. And that’s pretty much all we have to say about it…

Online critics and The Kibitzers alike have been pretty harsh on the trailer- most notably for the drastic changes the film seems to have from the book. That, and the ridiculous way in which these “zombies” attack.

Director Marc Foster not only decided to allow his undead horde to be fast-moving (a break from tradition but as we saw in the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake- it can be done) but also to behave like a school of piranha or swarm of locusts. The trailer’s opening scene with Gerry Lane  guessing what creature his daughter is thinking of alludes to this wild animal theme.

Paramount and star/producer Pitt also had to bring in Damon Lindelof (co-author of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus) to re-write a new ending for the movie even after footage for the third act had already been shot. Its release date has been pushed back from winter of 2012 to summer of 2013 as well. So it seems World War Z is off to very rocky start. But hey- no one said the zombie apocalypse was easy, and turning it into a successful movie seems even harder…

For now let’s look back at the Kibitzer’s fan-made trailer and see how close we got to the real thing. YouTube users and zombie fans might hate on us for making a fake trailer, but something tells us they’ll be wishing we had been in charge of the film!

Return of the Rocketeer!

24 Oct

With rumors circulating that Walt Disney Pictures is interested in a Rocketeer reboot, we here at the Kibitz knew exactly what we had to do! Especially with the box office success of the of the Iron Man franchise, it makes total sense why they want a piece of the flying superhero pie. As with their other films of late, hopefully the creative minds at Disney will have a slightly darker, more adult, take on the original 1991 film. So without further ado, here’s our remake of the high-flying, Nazi-fighting, American hero.

NFL Week 4 Predictions!

28 Sep

So we are coming off a bit of a rough week. This season thus far has been near impossible to predict. Maybe the refs are to blame? Probably not. Make sure to enjoy  special podcast round of picks with Aaron and guest podcaster, Julie! Take a listen!

THU, SEP 27 TIME

Cleveland at Baltimore 8:20 PM

Greg – Baltimore. I think Baltimore wins this game, but it will be closer than expected.

SUN, SEP 30
Carolina at Atlanta 1:00 PM

Greg – Atlanta. Is it time I give up on Carolina and Cam? I think Cam will bounce back, but Atlanta is just on a different level right now.

New England at Buffalo 1:00 PM

Greg – New England. Cannot remember the last time the Pats lost 3 games in a row.

The rest of the picks after the jump!
