Last night I had the honor of seeing Kick-Ass a week and a half before its nationwide release. Before I get into the review, I will start with a short brief plot synopsis for those of you who have been under a rock. This highly anticipated film is based on the comics, with the same title. The film follows the main character, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan with a few friends and who lives alone with his father. His life is not very difficult and pretty much just lives a normal life. However, one day he questions why no one has ever tried to be a superhero – and makes the decision to become one overnight, even though he has no powers or training.
Now let’s get into the review.
Kick-Ass is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake), so you know it’s going to be gritty going in – and this film doesn’t fail to disappoint. Although we have seen about 128 new superhero movies in the past 3 years, Kick-Ass stands apart, taking the comic-book genre and turning it on its head. While the plot is one seen before, Kick-Ass delivers it unlike any movie before it, and will most likely be the bar for future movies to come. One of the immediate things you notice in the film is the dialogue – smart, witty, quick. It almost doesn’t feel scripted, and it instantly sucks you into the film and the characters.
