Movie Review: Moonrise Kingdom

24 May

While I was desperately trying to strategically time my coughing fits to avoid missing the subtle gems hidden in the dialogue of Wes Anderson’s newest movie, Moonrise Kingdom, the wife of the man next to me leaned over and whispered – “This is funny!” To which he immediately responded – “This is weird.” Somewhere, Wes Anderson is smiling.

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, Moonrise Kingdom is a story of the love between Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward), the troubled daughter of two unhappily married lawyers – Laura (Frances McDormand) and Walt Bishop (Bill Murray); and least favorite Khaki Scout Sam (Jared Gilman), orphan, currently at scout camp for the summer. After a lengthy pen pal relationship following a chance meeting in a dressing room for a church play, the young couple decide to declare their love for each other and elope. Upon discovering Sam’s disappearance, Scout Master Ward (Edward Norton) reaches out to ineffectual island sheriff Captain Sharp (Bruce Willis) to begin the manhunt. Captain Sharp’s search brings him to Suzy’s house, where to the surprise of Laura and Walt Bishop; they find Suzy missing as well. On the brink of an anticipated record breaking storm, all (ir)responsible factions, including the other young scouts, join together to bring the children back to safety.

In Memoriam: 2011 Summer Movies

31 Aug

Well it’s the end of August everyone, and as we turn our calendars to September we also turn the page on the Summer of blockbusters that was 2011. A lot of movies came into this year (many of which we previewed!) with tons of hype only to underperform, while others surprised and are still holding strong in the box office. We even had the same movie from 2009 come out again! So once again we employed our own Andrew Smith to take to the edit bay and make a memoriam. A way for the Kibitzers to say farewell to the Summer and give you the viewer a reminder of what movies did well — and what movies flopped.

So sit back and take in the movies, they are arranged from lowest opening weekend to highest. And before you get all technical and start complaining about us not taking in natural disasters or number of movie theaters it opened in, too bad — that would’ve been tons of work. Enjoy it for what it is. Try not to tear up as we go through the films either.

We even put together a great interactive visualization for you to play with…HERE!

Monday Music Madness: “Save the World” – Swedish House Mafia & “Don’t Wanna Go Home” – Jason Derülo

6 Jun

Summer is here! Well sort of. Although it might not be officially Summer yet, the songs that are coming out make it sound like Summer is in full swing. Here are some songs that you might’ve missed over the past couple of weeks!

Save the World (feat. John Martin) – Swedish House Mafia

House music and Europe?? Who would’ve thunk it!? Just kidding, everyone thunk it because, let’s face it, when you think of bass thumping electro music, you can’t help but think of a sweaty night club in Europe. Swedish House Mafia would definitely be played in said sweaty clubs. This group of Swedish DJ’s, yes, they’re actually Swedish, have been producing beats since late 2008. They’ve been associated with such artists as Tinie Tempah and Pharrell. So check out “Save the World” and get this party started right:

A Look Ahead to Movies in 2011

1 Apr

It’s that time of the year again, after reviewing the best trailers of 2009 and previewing the movies of 2010, let’s now look ahead to the summer of 2011. The summer is when all the movie studios roll out their biggest and baddest movies for the world to see. This year promises to have some of the best blockbusters to date, you’ll find them arranged chronologically by release date (I’ll also throw in my two cents).

We also had an idea — why not make a super trailer of the trailers? So if you don’t want to scroll through all of these or just want to get pumped for the 2011 summer, or if….just watch this! It took us a whole day of editing with the amazing talented eye of Andrew Smith. We hope you like it as much as we do (yes we made this):

Isn’t that amazing?
